FSB warns businesses to check candidates’ references

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is contacting its members to warn them about the scale of reference fraud directed at small businesses. The FSB and BBC1’s Fake Britain cooperated on a survey of 1,800 small firms, which found nearly one in five (17%) had discovered candidates with fraudulent references.

The UK’s manufacturing industry continued to grow in August 2013 as output and new orders in the sector rose at the fastest rate since 1994. August was the country’s fifth consecutive month of expansion, according to the Markit/CIPS Purchase Managing Index.

Google set to help 30,000 small charities go online

Google has just launched a new campaign to help 30,000 of Britain’s smallest charities boost their fundraising through online tools and the internet. Established in partnership with the Media Trust and Charity Technology Trust, the ‘Grow Your Charity Online’ initiative will provide free training and tools for smaller charities across the country, reports The Guardian. It comprises an online learning hub, specialised training, workshops and live events.

HMRC increases minimum wage and introduces real time PAYE reporting

HMRC officials have increased the UK’s National Minimum Wage (NMW) for adults and apprentices. The changes, effective from 1st October 2012, will see approximately one million of Britain’s lowest paid workers benefit from pay increases. The adult NMW has increased by 11p to £6.19 per hour, while the apprentice rate has increased by 9p to £2.65 per hour. The rates for 18-20 year olds and 16-17 year olds remain unchanged.
